Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award 2019

Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award 2019

The presentation of the Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award for the best essay on the topic “My Favourite Rascal” will be made on Saturday 17th August 2019.
Yvonne Jenkins was the society’s convenor and president for many years. A talented artist and author, Yvonne inspired many members to write the stories of their ancestors as well as their own stories and the award is held annually in her honour. Yvonne’s aim was that we all record the family stories before they are lost forever.
Yvonne enjoyed collecting the family stories and had recorded many over the years. Her book Bowenfels, People Places, Past and Present was the last of many books which she authored and illustrated over thirty years.

Before the presentation of the award Jan Saundercock will present a talk/slideshow titled Community Challenge. Family Tragedy. The Pneumonic Influenza Epidemic Lithgow 1919.
Afternoon tea will be served following the presentation of the award.
Please RSVP for catering purposes by Friday 9th August 2019 by email to secretary.ldfhs@gmail.com, or by telephone 02 6353 1089 during opening hours on Tuesdays 6pm to 9pm or Fridays 11am to 4pm

Lithgow Fire Station Open Day

Lithgow Fire Station Open Day

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) will hold its annual Open Day on Saturday 18 May 2019 between 10.00am and 2.00pm and everyone is invited to come along.
Visitors will get a glimpse into Australia’s busiest fire and rescue service. They will have the opportunity to hop on a fire truck and chat with firefighters to learn more about what they do every day.
Open Day includes safety demonstrations, fire station tours and the chance to inspect equipment and trucks used by our firefighters when responding to all kinds of fire and rescue emergencies. There will also be an array of activities for all children who attend. It’s a great time to also speak to firefighters first-hand about fire safety in the home, including how to install and maintain smoke alarms and how to develop a home escape plan to ensure they can quickly and safely escape in the event of a fire.
For more information, contact your local fire station.

The remnants of the Blast Furnace stand tall reminding us that Lithgow was the birthplace of the Australian iron and steel industry. Constructed in 1913, the Lithgow Blast Furnace, at its peak, produced 105,000 tonnes of pig iron produced primarily for use by the Trans-Australia Railway.

Recent improvements at the site have provided waling paths across the site and informative signage with images of how things used to be.
